The Birth of the Ecology Symbol

Forty years ago(!), the great political cartoonist, Ron Cobb, conceived of and drew the Ecology Symbol, graciously giving up his copyright in order that it could be used without condition or restriction - or payment - for the public good. Its very first appearance was on our front cover back then, as seen below.
